Love at First Fight

When someone who has been a small group leader for most of her adult life marries someone who gets paid to speak about relationships you’d think they’d spend their free time together reading marriage devotionals, right?

Wrong.

Ok, so maybe I was the only person with that expectation but Mike and I seriously struggle in this area. If you were to walk into our library (err…sunroom) you’d see a ton of books about relationships, even more about Jesus, and enough copies of the Bible to share with a small classroom. It would seem natural that marriage devotionals would be right at home amongst our other treasures. But quite frankly we find most of them boring and have struggled to even finish one.

Enter Love at First Fight by Dena and Carey Dyer.

Never a pair to be called quitters we picked up this devotional in hopes that, finally, we would find one we could finish. Since this posts falls under the “great reads” category I guess the cat is already out of the bag. We liked it! So let me tell you why.

The format of each devotional is as follows; scripture, story from Dena and Carey’s marriage, prayer, questions, and advice from other married couples.

I loved the stories. They share both his and her perspective of the same event and boy could I relate. Mike loved the questions that gave us the opportunity to talk about what we read and put anything we learned into action. Lastly, we both thought the “Tips from the Pros” (other married couples) section was the cherry on top. We seriously appreciated that Dena and Carey sought out godly counsel.

So if you’re anything like us and have struggled to finish any marriage devotional give this one a try. It’s an easy read that really gets it’s value from the conversations and life change it sparks.
